Inland vessels are equipped with various sensors (echo sounder, loading gauge, GPS and optionally, fuel gauges). When combining all sensor data, this results in a chart of the water depth of the route being navigated. This information is dynamic and an important additional source to the static information provided by waterway authorities. When more inland vessels do this, the information becomes more detailed and reliable, and creates a dynamic water depth chart.

An Internet of Things (IoT) for inland shipping is exactly what CoVadem is all about. The Internet of Things connects different objects around us by sensors to a network. These sensors enable connected objects to connect a wider range of real-time data, immediately exchange them and enhancing information.

Ship operators automatically send their data via the sensors to a central server and in return they are able to navigate more efficiently as they can make maximum use of the navigable area provided by the waterway. By sharing their navigable depth measurements, the water depth data of each vessel apart are enhanced.

It is not only of interest for the ship operators or the logistics planners to optimise cargo loads, fuel use and predict better extimated time of arrival. This collaborative navigable depth measurement also helps waterway authorities to save money on costly regular depth measurements on busy routes.
