The EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) is a macro-regional strategy seeking to create synergies and coordination between existing policies and initiatives taking place across the Danube Region.

The Danube Region Strategy addresses a wide range of issues, including 'Mobility and Waterway Policy'.

Activities in 2013

  • River Information Services (RIS) implemented in Serbia and Romania and pilot operation for international data exchange between Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania started
  • Steering Group and Working Group Meetings held in Linz, Austria, with adoption of the "Appeal of Steering Group of Priority Area 1a of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) concerning the data exchange in River Information Services" 
  • 2nd Annual Stakeholder Forum in Bucharest, Romania 
  • Three bilateral meetings of the "Interministerial Committee for Sustainable Development of Inland Waterways Transport on the Romanian-Bulgarian common sector of the Danube" on future investments to improve navigation conditions on Danube, between km 375 - km 845.5
  • Closer cooperation with the Group on Biodiversity and common position on integrated approach for inland waterway infrastructure projects 
  • A working group with the Security Group to further the reduction of administrative barriers
  • Over 90 projects/project ideas identified contributing to the implementation of the EUSDR´s targets and action fields
  • Flagship project "Innovative Danube Vessel" was finalised.

Plans for 2014

  • Actions related to fairway maintenance improvements and fleet modernisation
  • Ensuring continued political backup for the implementation of the Luxemburg Declaration on infrastructure maintenance by the Danube riparian countries
  • Preparation of the Waterway Maintenance Masterplan for the Danube
  • Intensified cooperation with other Priority Areas of the EUSDR

Upcoming events

  • 2nd call for the Technical Assistance Facility for projects contributing to the implementation of the EUSDR´s targets and action fields will be launched by the Group Institutional Capacity & Cooperation.
  • Danube Business Talks on 19-20 March 2014 (Vienna, Austria), with focus on the industry segments "high & heavy" transports" and "biomass logistics" 
  • Steering Group and Working Group meetings on 25 June 2014 in Vienna, back-to-back with third EUSDR Annual Forum in Vienna (26-27 June 2014)
