Emission-free sailing for inland navigation
05 June 2020
Zero Emissions Services (ZES) is a new Dutch company set up to lease exchangeable battery containers, charged with sustainable energy, to businesses in inland shipping.
These interchangeable energy containers for new and existing inland vessels – called ZESPacks – are charged using renewable power. Skippers can quickly exchange a depleted container for a full one at exchange and loading stations. These stations are equipped with an ‘open access’ network and can also be used to stabilise the electricity grid or meet temporary local demand for electricity. ZES offers users a future-proof solution.
The Alphenaar, first ship to be equipped with electricity ZESPacks, will carry Heineken beer from brewery to port. In the future, ZESPacks will also be used for hydrogen.
