Promoting inland shipping in the Baltic

The EMMA project enhances inland navigation in the Baltic Sea Region.
Inland Navigation Europe is one of the associated organisations participating in the Interreg Baltic Sea Region project EMMA. The EMMA project enhances freight mobility and logistics by strengthening inland waterway and river-sea transport and by promoting new international shipping services. With 21 partner organizations in five countries – Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden – EMMA creates a strong and joint voice for inland navigation.
EMMA is appointed as flagship project of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. Its flagship status under the EUSBSR Policy Area Transport reflects the importance of further development of inland waterways in the Baltic Sea Region. Besides tackling the challenges and opportunities focusing on IWT, EMMA aims to increase the modal share of IWT and foster a better integration of IWT in the transport chains and the EU Strategy for the BSR.
The EMMA project interacts closely with the political and administrative level, but also links up with actors in the transport market and industry. The concrete transport pilots that prove the feasibility of inland waterway transport in the region have also gained media attention for inland shipping. Studies and analyses that are produced under the auspices of EMMA provide information and identify measures that improve the competitiveness and strengthen the future development of IWT as well as raise the awareness of the potentials of IWT – in this way contributing to a more sustainable logistics system in the Baltic Sea Region.
