Many innovation initiatives take place in road transport. What could you do on the water? For the new ship Gouwenaar, Nedcargo considers remote control, sensors that help to sail more efficiently, share data to ensure optimum flow, cruise control, bridge collision prevention, line tracking system, berthing assistance. The company looks forward to a “green wave” for ships doing away with delays at locks and bridges, something waterway managers are already working on. These innovations will enable better trip planning, semi-autonomous shipping and even autonomous sailing on certain stretches. With these features, Nedcargo wants to make the inland shipping safer, efficient and ready to meet theincreasing shortage of crew.

By 2020, the Gouwenaar will be able to sail 2 emission boxes through the use of battery and hydrogen technology.

The goal is that the new ship transports 12,500 containers or 600 million bottles of beer each year between Alphen aan den Rijn and Rotterdam.
